As a Special Agent, you’ll use your tech knowledge to protect the nation from cybercrimes, data breaches, ransomware, and other security threats. Whether your experience is in cybersecurity, digital forensics, software engineering, or network administration, you’ll apply your technical skills in exciting and meaningful ways.
What You’ll Do
- Use your IT expertise to prevent and investigate cyber threats and attacks on national security.
- Participate in some of the FBI’s most complex cases, leveraging specialized technology to solve problems.
- Engage in continued training to stay up-to-date on cutting-edge tools and techniques.
- Work in diverse environments and collaborate with teams across the FBI and other agencies.
- Be ready to take on high-energy duties, including participating in arrests, executing search warrants, and conducting raids.
Salary and Benefits
- Starting Salary: $97,300–$125,544 per year (based on experience and location).
- After graduating from the FBI Academy, starting pay ranges from $81,243 to $129,717 (including potential adjustments).

Key Requirements
To qualify, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be between 23 and 36 years old (applicants must be appointed before their 37th birthday).
- Hold a valid driver’s license with at least six months of driving experience.
- Pass a thorough background investigation, polygraph test, and meet strict physical fitness requirements.
- Complete approximately 18 weeks of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA.
- Be flexible to relocate to one of the FBI’s 56 Field Offices or satellite locations based on agency needs.
- Be willing to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and respond to assignments at any time.
Education
You’ll need a bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S.-accredited institution, ideally in a field such as computer science, engineering, data science, cybersecurity, or a related technical discipline. Transcripts will be required to verify your education.
